Art as Discourse

2016 | Interview | Part of the publication: Eigenlijk ben ik niet zo goed in verhalen vertellen, maar…

In 2016, I was interviewed by Lars van Iwaarden, Alina Miescher, and Bram Pulles, who took the opportunity to delve into my journey as an artist and my evolving ideas about the nature of art. The interview served as a reflection of my time at the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts, a period in which I was intentionally questioning and challenging the conventional, institutionalized definitions of art.

Our conversation centered on the idea that being an artist is about much more than just creating physical objects or artifacts. For me, art is not confined to the tangible; it is a dynamic process that extends into a broader realm of discourse. I argued that artistic practice is rooted in four interconnected spheres: the private, the market, the public, and the social.

These four spheres are not separate; they are interwoven, and each artist navigates and engages with them in their own way. This perspective shaped my artistic practice at the time and continues to influence how I understand the role and identity of an artist today.
