Public Homebase

2017 | Participatory art installation | Part of the group exhibition 'Marres Currents #4: Running Time' At: Marres - House for contemporary Culture in Maastricht | Curated by Barbara Cueto and Bas Hendrikx | Many many thanks to De Nieuwe Context for lending me their custom made furniture.

The installation Public Homebase functions as a library, a workshop space, and a studio. It is an open hub for visitors of the exhibition, who are welcome to browse, explore and participate.

The installation reframes the studio practice, opening it up and inviting visitors to participate in it. During the exhibition, I hosted a series of events, workshops, and readings. Workshops and events were free for all exhibition visitors. The installation also functions as a place to read books and watch video’s that served as an inspiration for the participating artists of the exhibition.

I invited the participants of this Marres Currents exhibition to bring books and video's that serve as inspiration to their artistic practice. Resulting in a temporary library that could help better understand the exhibition or could serve as starting point for discussion during the workshops. These books and video's were ‘on show’ and ready to use during the whole exhibition.

The furniture was designed by 'De Nieuwe Context' a research and design studio specialized in living. They have designed furniture that is easy to assemble and disassemble since no fasteners are required. Therefore it lends itself very well to the dynamic and changeable working conditions of Public Homebase.

During the exhibition, I organized several workshops. One for adults, one for children and one for (art) students. All of them took the exhibition as starting point. They began with a walk through the exhibition in wich the artist and the participants of the workshop reflected on the artworks, the exhibition and the venue. After this walk they returned to Public Homebase to make some tea and coffee and further share their experiences and thoughts. There was also the possibility to visualize during the workshop. These drawings got a place in the exhibition space.
